Chasing Illusion

Between half-sleeping and half-awake, a gust of wind mixed with the fresh tang of washing powder blew in, like a signal, beckoning me to the distance. I painted down this scene as the beginning of my imaginative journey, and continued for months, putting the character in the ever-changing world which affected by my daily experience, finally ended in the ascending to the Tower of Babel.

Since ancient times, human beings have longed for the higher grounds, constantly breaking through existing cognition. Perhaps all we are chasing are just illusion, but it is this chase that makes us human.

The Empty Room

"Here come the last 48 hours of the earth,

80% of the earth's surface has been covered by the End of the World. The white-house colonies surrounding the Himalayas are expected to be the last shelters to be swallowed up.

This is the last broadcast of Morning News.”

"Any vacant room?"

"There’s one with no light."

"Doesn't matter! I'm going to the end of the steppe and won’t be back until the dawn."

"Hi!"

"Let me get you some water.
Oops! Sorry!"

"Don't you feel scared?"

"Well...but that won't help, right? Let's just live the last two days to the full." His insipid tone makes me feel desperate somehow.

Why the water in the cup always disappear when it approach my mouth?

"Hey! It’s been long time."

An odd scene of deja vu suddenly flash through my mind. It feels like we have been through the same doomsday already.

"A second time, How so? Could it still be called doomsday when it can happen twice?"

It seems the last empty room has been occupied.

-

The air in the house is getting increasingly unbearable. I’m going down the stairs.

In the steppe, people lined up in two long queues, like performing some kind of ritual.

Actually, they are just queuing for the toilets.

What's at the end of the steppe? Has she escaped out of the edge of this vanishing world?"

"We regret to inform you,

because of the calculation mistake, the doomsday will actually arrive tomorrow. It won't go wrong this time."

This story stems from a dream I had about the end of the world. The characters are originally people around me, and I transformed them into animals based on their personalities.

Since the moment I knew "death", I haven't stop thinking about it. "The end of the world" symbolizes the overwhelming , inescapable side of death. In my dream, with the countdown to the doomsday, anxiety and fear gradually drown me; when I turned it into illustrations, I tried to give it an appearance of fairy tale or allegory, which seems light but also bring uneasiness and alienation.

It is a story about a shadow that comes out of the water into the real world, becoming more and more like a real human being by imitating people. The inspiration comes from Borges’ ‘Circular Ruins’.
