"Embryo" is a silent graphic
novel that presents a dreamlike journey. Drawing inspiration from the absurdity
of the polarized roles of heroes and monsters in ancient mythology, Embryo
constructs a paradoxical and labyrinthine world where the hero is also the
monster, with everything coexisting with its opposite.
While incorporating various other
allusions, the story mainly references two ancient myths: the Chinese myth
"Hou Yi Shoots the Sun" and the Greek myth "Theseus Kills the
Minotaur". In both, a monster causes havoc among mortals and is ultimately
slain by a hero.
As the story unfolds, the protagonist
transitions from hero to monster, and her perspective of the world shifts, with
different memories flooding in. Through this journey, the author challenges
traditional character labels and explores the complexities of humanity,
conveying a sentiment of compassion for all beings, where history repeats and
destinies mirror each other, from birth to death, light to darkness.
